Dr McKellar has one of the few specular microscopes in New Zealand. With this device he is able to photograph and analyse the individual cells that line the back surface of the cornea. This helps diagnose conditions such as Fuch’s corneal dystrophy, assess the safety of cataract surgery and monitor corneal transplants.
