Bicarbonate solution is an ‘old fashioned’ but very effective way to manage some eye conditions such as:
- Crusting associated with conjunctivitis
- Abnormal bacterial populations on the surface of the eye following surgery or the use of antibiotics
Mix a teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in a glass of boiled, cooled water. Keep the solution in a refrigerator and discard after one week. You can use bicarbonate as an eyebath rinse or to clean the eyelids.
Bicarbonate solution is used to bathe the eye using a old fashioned eye bath. Be sure to keep the eye bath clean. It can be washed it in a sink or diswasher just like any household cup. Make sure all the detergent is rinsed off.
Lid margin cleaning
Clean the eyelid margins with a gauze square dipped in the bicarbonate solution. Brush the eyelid gently along the roots of the eyelashes. It is important not to scrub the eyelids as this will further inflame the area.
